Kuranda

10/8/13 – We popped down to Kuranda for a visit, if you haven’t been there before it really is well worth going to. We have been to Kuranda many years before and explored the area with our children, going to Birdworld and other attractions.

Kuranda is known as The Village in a Rainforest, made famous by the Kuranda Markets many years ago. The original market section is still there as well as the Heritage Markets and the New Markets. Really the whole village is a big market. We found the original section to be more alternate, tied died clothing, dreadlocks, incense etc. The new markets are really lots of souvenir shops and the Heritage more modern type of markets. It gets busy when the Kuranda train from Cairns comse in. Overall it’s a very pleasant place.

We also stopped in at Coffee Works and picked up some supplies 🙂 The peanut man for some nuts we thought he was a bit pricey.

Cairns

11/8/13 – We did a day trip down to Cairns, nice enough place but a day was enough for us. The road down is very very windy down the mountains for about 20km, is a pretty drive.

We stocked at the Curtain Fig Tree, it’s an amazing site. Only a few Kim’s on the main roads so worth stopping for a look. It’s only a short walk from the car park on a board walk.

The Esplanade in Cairns has been well done with board walk along the foreshore and a large pool at one end. Not such a pretty site when the tide is out. Most of the shops are either food, souvenir shops or travel shops. We found it was better in the arvo as there was a bit of a vibe about the place. The area gets packed and can be hard to get a park.

We also had a walk around the port area. We liked up the other end of the esplanade where there was less people, nice to sit under the shade of the trees for lunch. We came back to the same spot for fish and chips for tea.
