Hit the road Jack

Mon 20th – We decided to have a relaxing day around at camp. We caught up on some chores, did a short walk, went for a paddle down the river and then went for a swim. The water was a bit cooler than up at the gorge, but all still good fun.

Tues 21st – The road to Riversleigh is a good dirt road, couple of easy creek crossings. Riversleigh didn’t do a lot for us but we don’t know what we are looking for. We thought the most interesting thing was the information shelter, very well done.

There are a few fossils in rocks that are sign posted, not as many as we thought there would be. Maybe they point out a few and you are supposed to discover the rest yourself, again helps if you know what you are looking for.

The Big Bird fossil was interesting.

The road heading south was still pretty good, few creeks crossings. The first 5km of the 12km road that cuts across to the Gregory Downs – Camooweal road was being graded as we were on it. The rest was like a goat umm cow track, literally, lots of over growth, narrow and rocky. This road was not suitable for caravans at the time we went on it.

Wow camping on the Gregory river was awesome. There were heaps of caravans there when we arrived about 2pm. We were able to find a spot right on the river, quick setup and then lunch. As we ate our lunch we watched nearly everyone whizzing by on the current of the river past our camp, over some little rapids. All laughing and having fun, they kept telling us to stop laughing at them and get in. We did eventually, bit cold at first but then it was ok. The current was quiet strong and like the others lots of fun.

This is a beaut spot, bins are provided. The main bridge does go over the campsite so it can be a bit noisy from trucks but that quietens down over night. The sound of running water goes all night of course and there is some pump noise coming from the small town. There is actually a sign in town pointing to where vans and motorhomes are supposed to camp, not down at the river, but no one pays any attention. We were told fuel here was $1.92
